Bring Your Own Learning Device

Technology at Emmaus enables interactive and collaborative learning

Call us TODAY to find out more about our innovative educational experiences!

Emmaus Catholic College runs a mandatory 1:1 (one device per student) Bring Your Own Learning Device (BYOLD) program where incoming Year 7 students supply their own device for learning.

The 1:1 BYOLD program has enabled the College to divert funds into more sound programs such as upgrading existing computer labs used for elective courses, increasing the range and density of our wireless network infrastructure, and the rollout of Mobile TV’s and LED LCD TV’s in replacement of projectors, which is allowing a higher level of interactivity and collaborative learning. Our purchasing strategy also includes the supply of apps and software to ensure a 21st Century learning culture here at the college.

Please read through the information below and if you have any questions concerning the purchase of an appropriate device for your child’s learning, please do not hesitate to contact the college.

It is recommended a new or used Apple Macbook (in working order) with a minimum storage of 256GB is used. As students choose electives in Year 9 and as the curriculum becomes more demanding at this time, storage of 512GB is recommended subject to your child’s courses. All 2020+ Macbook models now use an M1 Processor Chip. Unlike older models which used either an Intel or AMD processor, Apple now maufactures these chips in house and have called the first version M1. The new chips have increased performance on the new models and allow more features such as running IOS apps on the macbook.

Students studying multimedia or technology related courses are recommended to purchase a Macbook Pro (with Touch Bar) due to its higher processing performance.

If you have any questions concerning the purchase of an appropriate device for your child’s learning, please do not hesitate to contact the college IT department at emmaus@parra.catholic.edu.au.

For all Mac and IOS device repairs, Emmaus recommendes using an Apple Authorised Service Provider such as Mac1 Service or Apple directly. Mac1 uses genuine Apple parts and hosts certified technicians. Visit the link below to find out more.

Insurance can be sought through the retail store of purchase using the Apple Protection Plan, or through your own insurance company of choice as a portable valuable.

Emmaus does not take responsibility for personal items and devices brought to school. Students need to be directly responsible. Students bring their own property to the school at their own risk and the school will not accept any responsibility for loss or damage. Our teachers will take measures to ensure all valuables are stowed safely and in practical subjects where bags are left outside due to WHS requirements, students are reminded to retain their valuables and bring them into the learning space.

Classroom operation is not designed for students to bring any device, this means that students are advised to purchase an Apple laptop or Windows Hybrid/Laptop so that classroom delivery can be streamlined. It is not required to purchase a NEW device, you can use an existing one or purchase a refurbished model.

Starting 2021 Emmaus will begin trialing support for Windows Devices. It is important to note that while we are begining trials, the college is still implimenting infrustructure for these devices and a Macbook is still preferred.

Emmaus is dedicated to supporting 21st Century learning and more options may become available in future.

The college uses a universal applet called Box of Books that will digitally store all of your child’s purchased textbooks. Depending on the course studies, a physical textbook may be preferred, this is still available (usually at an additional cost subject to course prescribed text). A student book list is available and updated each year with more information specific to your child’s courses.

In addition to prescribed textbooks, our teachers are using 21st century teaching and learning tools to enhance teaching and learning. Many of our teachers are also creating their own websites to deliver tailored content to their students. Be sure to ask your child about the different learning technologies they use in their subjects!
